Enviromental concerns are changing the requirements for both customers and legislators. The industry is challenged to deliver big reductions in fuel consumption (CO2 reduction) while at the same time reducing toxic emissions like NOx, THC, CO and Particles. All this should not come with an increased price since there is over capacity and market share is hard to gain but easy to loose.

Several solutions are being taken into account with advanced aftertreatment for diesel engines and Downsizing and hybridization as a solution for gasoline engines as the short term path ways. Another interesting development are EV’s: a rapid market introduction seems to be possible if some automotive and non automotive hurdles are overcome.
